Improving University Network Services

22 Jun 06

The Columbia University network -- the “highway” on which online resources and services travel and are delivered -- is a critical service that CUIT is committed to improving. Last summer, in one of our first steps as a new organization, we expanded the network infrastructure to ten times its previous capacity. This increase in capacity provided the network bandwidth necessary to support the growing number of network connections provided in campus buildings. There is still more work to be done, as we improve current services and add new ones that will result in a better and faster online experience -- whether you are plugging your computer into a wall jack or connecting your laptop wirelessly.

High-speed Internet Service Installed in University Apartments

CUIT is also in the midst of a multi-year project to wire University Apartment Housing buildings in Morningside Heights for high-speed Ethernet connections. This project extends the Ethernet network service already available in classrooms, offices, and all student residence halls both on and off campus. With over 80 percent of Columbia’s apartment buildings already wired for service, the project is near completion. One of the benefits for Columbia faculty, staff or students in University housing is that once a UAH building is wired, affiliated tenants have the option to choose Columbia’s Ethernet service over a commercial service provider. There are good reasons for choosing Columbia's service. When accessing University online resources from home, Ethernet service is 20 to 100 times faster than commercial provider offerings. Columbia's Ethernet service also provides faculty with access to Internet2, the high-performance research and education network, and other high-speed networks such as the CERN Large Hadron Collider network.

Wireless Coverage Extended to Lerner

In response to the growth in popularity and demand for wireless networking on the Morningside campus, CUIT has recently extended wireless coverage to include all student areas and event spaces in Lerner Hall. For other coverage areas on campus, see below, Wireless Coverage Map for Morningside Campus. We will continue to expand the existing coverage and improve service. We are also in the process of testing newer wireless systems which would result in a better, more reliable network for wireless computing.
