New Printing Improvements in Place for Fall

18 Oct 06

If you have used Columbia's campus printing facilities this semester, you may have noticed that CUIT has made some improvements, based on feedback from students and faculty.

More High-Speed Printers. To make it more convenient to print documents, we have installed six new high-speed, high-volume laser printers in heavily-used locations: Rooms 200 and 300 Lerner each have two, plus one in 304 Broadway and one in 108 Schapiro. For a complete list of public University printers see Printing Locations.

Undergraduate Printing Reserve. After the success of a pilot printing reserve feature last spring, we have established a semester reserve of 100 pages for all undergraduates. This reserve is in addition to the regular 100-page quota each week. Additional pages printed beyond the quota will be deducted from the printing reserve.

Printing Allowances. Printing allowances for faculty, instructors, and graduate students depend on University affiliation and the location of the printer. To check your specific quota and to find out how many pages you have remaining, see Printing Quotas.

Double-sided Printing Default. In the Guide to Green Computing section of the University's Environmental Stewardship web site, we are reminded to "print and copy responsibly". It is now easier to do that by conserving paper when printing from computers in the CUIT labs around campus. Jobs that you send to a NINJa-enabled printer from any CUIT Windows or Macintosh station will default to print double-sided. You can, of course, switch to single sided, if needed. Here's how.
  • In Windows: in the "Print" dialog window, select "printername-singlesided" (e.g., butler213a-singlesided) from the "Name." drop-down list. Then click "OK".

  • Macintosh: in the "Print" dialog window, select your choice of "Single Sided" from the "Presets" drop-down list. Then click "Print".
