Callianassa  burrows

The outcrop shows more and less cemented beds of sand in Pliocene littoral deposits of Marche Apennines. Differential cementation emphasizes biogenic traces, which have both vertical and horizontal orientations, and locally cross each other producing irregular, web- like masses. The burrows reflect the activity of a small crustacean, called Callianassa,  which explores the sediment both for food and shelter. This trace is another indicator of nearshore environments.
