Acknowledgments

It gives me pleasure to acknowledge my indebtedness to the late Professor Robert A. Pratt, Professor Emeritus of the University of Pennsylvania, who suggested a segment of this project to me as a doctoral dissertation. I am especially grateful for his encouragement and support during work on this Name Dictionary. I would also like to thank Professor Ruth J. Dean and Professor Siegfried Wenzel for reading portions of the manuscript and for offering valuable suggestions for its improvement. Very special thanks to Professor Donald K. Fry, Poynter Institute for Media Studies, for rescuing me from the pit of error in several places. My thanks to the Research Foundation of the City University of New York for a grant while the work was in progress. Two colleagues have been particularly helpful. The late Samuel A. Moore read a very large portion of the typescript and pointed out infelicities of style, and I am very sorry indeed that he is not here to see the finished work. Professor Nancy Black read my Introduction and indicated places for further development. My deep gratitude goes to my friend and neighbor, Anne Itkin, for holding my hand and pulling me out when I found myself in the slough of despond. The librarians at the Brooklyn College Library have been models of patience with my requests and wizards at locating books at other libraries. To all of them my hearty thanks.
