AMPHIOUN. Amphion was the son of Jupiter and Antiope and the husband of Niobe. He became king of Thebes and built the walls of the city by the magic of his lyre (Met VI.177-183; OM VI.973-997).

Arcite bewails his predicament because now the royal house of Cadmus and Amphioun has been brought to confusion by his imprisonment, KnT 1545-1549. Not even the music of Amphioun and Orpheus can equal the music at Januarie's wedding, MerchT 1716. Amphioun, who built the walls of Thebes, cannot sing half as well as Phoebus, MancT 116-118. [Nyobe: Tantale]

Amphioun appears only in final rhyming position, KnT 1546; MerchT 1716; MancT 116.
