ASSUER, ASSUERE, ASSUERUS is the Persian title of Xerxes I, who reigned from 486 to 464 B.C. The Book of Esther tells how his prime minister, Haman, persuaded the king to set a date, the thirteenth day of Adar, when the Jews in his kingdom would be slaughtered. Esther, however, advised by her uncle Mordecai, outwitted Haman and persuaded the king to grant permission for the Jews to slay their enemies on that day.

Ester caused Assuere to elevate her uncle Mardochee, MerchT 1371-1374. May is as demure as Ester at Assuer's court, MerchT 1744-1745. In the reign of Assuerus, Ester exalted the people of God by her good counsel, Mel 1100. [Ester]

The forms appear in the Latin Vulgate Liber Hester. Assuer occurs in medial position, MerchT 1745; Assuere occurs in medial position, MerchT 1374, with elided final -e; Assuerus occurs in the prose of Mel 1100.
