BRUTUS3. Marcus Junius Brutus, c. 85-42 B.C., was Pompey's comrade during the civil war that brought Julius Caesar to power. Caesar pardoned him and made him governor of Cisalpine Gaul in 46 B.C. In 44, however, Brutus joined the conspiracy against Caesar because it seemed to him that Caesar was assuming tyrannical powers. He soon found himself involved in another civil war, this time against Antony and Octavian, and in 42 they defeated him at Philippi, where he committed suicide (Plutarch, Life of Brutus).
