CALCAS, CALKAS is Criseyde's father in Troilus and Criseyde. As Apollo's priest he is skilled in "calkulynge," Tr I.71; Tr IV.1398, and "calculating" gives some indication of his character. Susan Schibanoff points out that Calcas is one of the redendenamen or "speaking names" of medieval etymology, that is, a name that provides an interpretation of a character. [Argyve1: Creseyde: Troilus]

The name occurs 16 times in medial positions, Tr I.71, 87, 92; Tr IV.63, 64, 134, 333, 663, 761, 1466; Tr V.149, 508, 845, 846, 897, 1575; and twice in final rhyming position, Tr I.66; Tr IV.73.
