CERES, the ancient Roman goddess of agriculture, took on the attri-
butes of Greek Demeter, goddess of grains (wheat, oats, etc.), and was identified with her. Her daughter Proserpina was abducted by Pluto, also known as Hades, and taken to the underworld. The trio Ceres, Bacchus, and Venus appear together in classical and medieval literature and art.
