DARIUS1, the Mede, invaded the Chaldean kingdom and overthrew Belshazzar (Daniel 5:3; 6:1-27). He is called fil[ius] Asueri de semine Medorum, "the son of Assuerus, of the seed of the Medes," Daniel 9:l. His historical identity has not been established.

The Monk tells how Darius overthrew Balthasar and occupied his kingdom, MkT 2231-2238. Machaut narrates this story in Le Confort d'ami 955-1130. [Balthasar: Daniel]
