DIVES was a rich man, at whose gate the beggar Lazarus sat, while Dives fared sumptuously every day. When he died, he opened his eyes in hell, while Lazarus went to Abraham's bosom when he died. The name occurs in the Latin Vulgate, Luke 16:19-31.
