DRAGOUN. The alpha or brightest star in the constellation the Dragon lies in the Dragon's Tail. This Dragon, guardian of the golden apples of the Hesperides, was slain by Hercules when he went to gather the fruit in his eleventh labor (Met IX.187-190).

The slaying of the Dragoun is one of Hercules's labors, MkT 2101, Bo 4, Metr 7.34-35. Chaucer describes the "fortunat ascendent" as that sign in the house of a planet of friendly aspect, but not in the house of an evil planet, like Mars or the Dragoun's Tail, Astr. II.4. 30-35.

Dragoun, the ME variant, appears in final rhyming position, MkT 2101.

Ovid, Met, ed. and trans. F.J. Miller, II: 16-17.
