JEREMIE, JEREMYE. Jeremiah, the prophet of Israel, began to preach in 627 B.C. The Book of Jeremiah and the Book of Lamentations are attributed to him (NCE VII: 867).

The Pardoner quotes from Jeremiah 4:2, on swearing false oaths, PardT 635. The Parson begins his sermon with a text from Jeremiah 4:16, ParsT 75. Although the Parson names the prophet as his source, ParsT 189, he quotes I Kings 2:30. The passage on swearing false oaths, Jeremiah 4:2, appears in ParsT 592.

Jeremye, the English variant, appears in final rhyming position, PardT 635; Jeremie/Jeremye occur in the Parson's prose tale.
