JOHN2 is the old carpenter in The Miller's Tale, who lives in Oxford. Carpenters were numerous in medieval Oxford, as may be seen in the college account rolls. John is a rich man but takes in boarders, one of whom is Nicholas. John marries Alisoun, a very young woman, and Alisoun and Nicholas soon have an affair. [Absolon2: Alisoun2: Nicholas1: Peter2]

The name occurs five times in medial positions, MillT 3369, 3501, 3513, 3639, 3662, and once in final rhyming position, MillT 3577.
