JOHN4 is the generic name for a priest. Harry Bailly wonders if the Monk's name is Daun John, MkP 1929; he addresses the Nun's Priest as "thou Sir John," NPP 2810-2815. It may also be his real name, for the poet addresses him as "this sweete preest, this goodly man, Sir John," NPP 2820.
