LONGIUS. Longinus, fl. first century A.D., a Roman centurion, pierced the side of Jesus with his sword as he hung on the cross, according to tradition. He subsequently became blind and was converted to Christianity, for which he suffered martyrdom (Legenda aurea XLVII).

Longius pierced Christ's heart and made his blood run down, ABC 163.

The shortened form, Longius, appears medially.
