MENELAUS, son of Atreus, was Agamemnon's brother, Helen's husband, and king of Sparta. After Paris kidnapped his wife Menelaus sought revenge, and the Greeks sailed for Troy. In the Iliad Agamemnon assumes a greater role than the betrayed husband, Menelaus, because he is the high king of Mycenae, while Menelaus is king of a lesser city.

Lady Philosophy says that Agamenon, son of Atreus, purged the marriage chambers of his brother by destroying Troy. Chaucer adds a gloss identifying Menelaus as Agamemnon's brother, Bo IV, Metr 7.6-7. [Agamenon: Eleyne2: Paris]

The name appears only in this instance.
