REGULUS. Marcus Atilius Regulus, fl. third century B.C., defeated the Carthagenians during his consulship in 256 B.C. and captured Tunis. In 255, however, he was defeated and captured by Xantippus. Cicero uses the story to illustrate political and moral expediency (De officiis III.xxvi.99-115).

Lady Philosophy tells how Regulus suffered reversals of Fortune, Bo II, Prosa 6.70-78.

Regulus is the family name of the Roman clan Atilia.

Cicero, De officiis, ed. and trans. Walter Miller, 374-397.
