SCORPIO, SCORPIOUN, SCORPIUS, the constellation the Scorpion, is the eighth sign of the zodiac, the day house of Mars, the depression of the Moon (Tetrabiblos I.18, 19), and the moist and cold sign (Confessio Amantis VII.1121-1140). It lies in the southern hemisphere near Libra, partly in the Milky Way.

Pheton, unable to control his father's horses, let go the reins when he passed Scorpion, HF II.944-959. It is one of the signs of the zodiac, Astr I.8.4. At 9 P.M. Scorpius is in 10 degrees of its ascent, Astr II.3.56-58. The sign lies directly opposite Taurus, Astr II.6.16. It is the "sovereign" or western sign that Aquarius obeys, Astr II.28.38. [Pheton]

Scorpio and Scorpius, both Latin variants, occur in the Treatise on the Astrolabe; Scorpioun, the OF variant, appears in final rhyming position, HF II.948.
