SOPHIE is the daughter of Melibee and Prudence in The Tale of Melibee. In neither the Latin original nor the French version is the daughter named. Melibee's three enemies wound Sophie in five places: her feet, her hands, her ears, her nose, and her mouth, Mel 972. The three enemies are the world, the flesh, and the devil, and Sophie is wounded in her five senses, Mel 1421-1425. Sophie represents the soul. [Melibee: Prudence]

Sophie, the English variant of Greek Sophia, "wisdom," occurs once, at the beginning of the tale, Mel 967.
