Astronomy Department Public Outreach presents: Public Lecture and Stargazing
Friday, August 24, 2012 - 8:00pm - 10:00pm
Columbia University, Morningside Campus, Pupin Hall: Follow signs posted in the lobby.
Every other Friday, the Astronomy Department at Columbia University sponsors public outreach. Attendees get access to astronomical information through timely lectures by members of our department aimed at a public audience. After the thirty-minute lecture, if the weather is clear, the public can proceed to the roof of Pupin Hall and be guided by volunteers in stargazing and observing through the telescopes of Rutherfurd Observatory. A slide show and discussion with an astronomer about various astronomical images happens if the weather is cloudy.
Lecturer and title: Munier Salem, PhD candidate: ''You Can't Win, You Can't Break Even, and You Can't Get Out of the Game''.
Abstract: The standard model and general relativity may come and go, but few physicists believe experiments will ever topple the laws of thermodynamics. Come find out why you've never seen a perpetual motion device, why scientists have yet to cool anything down to absolute zero and why even a magician cannot produce something from nothing. These are all thanks to the laws of thermodynamics --- the rules of the game --- and they apply to everything from grand theories of the cosmos to your sock drawer.
