What Every PhD Student and Postdoc Should Know about Conflict of Interest

In academic research, the relationships between researchers and industry are critically important for the healthy exchange of ideas, opportunities and resources. These relationships can give rise to significant discoveries and to the translation of those discoveries into useful products.  The financial incentives that accompany such relationships, however, may lead to financial conflicts of interest that have the potential to create real or apparent bias in research.  What is a conflict of interest?  How does the University handle conflicts?  What should you do if you have a conflict or believe someone else might?
