Photography Exhibit with Anatoly Pronin.

Behind the Porous Curtain, curated by Regina Khidekel, showcases 18 works by Anatoly Pronin. These works capture the Soviet period of artistic inspiration of the 1970s, as the post-Stalin thaw opened a pathway through the iron curtain for modern Western art and culture to enter the Soviet Union. Most of Pronin's photographs were shot behind the theater curtain, capturing the private and almost intimate world of rehearsals with iconic figures such as George Balanchine, Laurent Terzieff, and Marcel Marceau.

The theater tours displayed in this exhibit ended the isolation of the Soviet art scene, reviving names erased from history and introducing new ideas and methods. One of the central subjects of this collection is Leonid Jakobson, a non-conformist choreographer who created masterpieces despite strict state control, transforming classical ballet technique into modern dance lexicon.

Anatoly Pronin has pursued photography since childhood. After graduating from Leningrad State University, he worked for Leningrad publishing houses and magazines before moving to the United States in 1981. His works are part of the collections of the State Russian Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Library of Congress, among many others. He has been awarded numerous grants and awards, including the silver medal at the 1971 Berlin International Photo Exhibition.

This exhibit is part of the Fragments from the Past series, an ongoing collaboration between the Russian American Cultural Center and the Harriman Institute which aims to create a mosaic of historical events related to the Russian artistic and cultural landscape both in the Soviet Union and the West.

"Analysis of Parallel Replica Dynamics"

Parallel replica dynamics was first proposed by A.F. Voter as a numerical tool for accelerating molecular dynamics simulations characterized by a sequence of infrequent, but rapid, transitions from one state to another. An example would be the migration of a defect through a crystal. Parallel replica dynamics accelerates this by simulating many replicas simultaneously, concatenating the simulation time spent of the ensemble, as thought it were a single long trajectory. This leads to several numerical analysis questions: Is parallel replica dynamics doing what we think it is? For what systems will it be useful? How do we implement it efficiently? In this talk, I will thoroughly describe the algorithm and report on progress towards rigorous justification. Open questions will also be highlighted.

Dr. Simpson earned his Ph.D. in 2009 in Applied Mathematics in the Department of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics in the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science at Columbia University under the joint supervision of Prof. Michael Weinstein and Prof. Marc Spiegelman. He was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Toronto and is currently a PIRE/DOE postdoctoral fellow in School of Mathematics at the University of Minnesota.

Elucidating and engineering microbial community behavior

A grand challenge in the field of synthetic biology is to engineer not only single cells but also communities of cells that exhibit coordinated, population level behaviors. Synthetic biologists have employed components from acyl-homoserine lactone (AHL)-based quorum-sensing (QS) systems in their endeavors to build muticellular systems. To date, the regulators available in the toolbox of QS regulatory parts for engineering intercellular communication have been limited to transcriptional activators, most frequently the AHL-dependent activator LuxR. Transcriptional activators function by recruiting RNA polymerase (RNAp) to a promoter sequence and thus require specific interactions with RNAp. In contrast, transcriptional repressors bind to operator regions within a promoter and inhibit the initiation of transcription. To expand this toolbox of regulatory parts, we have engineered the AHL-dependent transcriptional repressor, EsaR, and the esa promoter for use in synthetic microbial communities. The availability of intercellular communication-dependent repressors will enable new circuits and network behaviors not feasible with existing parts. We have used directed evolution to identify a number of EsaR variants that respond to AHL concentrations ranging three orders of magnitude. We have also engineered the esa operon, where we have focused on varying the location and number of EsaR binding sites. We have characterized our new promoters using gene expression assays and found promoters with decreased basal expression (tighter regulation) and promoters that can be both activated and repressed by EsaR. These new transcriptional repressors and promoters will enable construction of novel engineered density-dependent or multicellular systems for metabolic engineering applications.

Biography: Cynthia Collins joined the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in March 2008 as an assistant professor. Cynthia grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. She obtained her Honours B.Sc. in Chemistry and Biochemistry from the University of Toronto in 2000, and her Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics from Caltech in 2006. She subsequently completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Calgary, where she was the recipient of a prestigious Alberta Ingenuity Post-Doctoral Fellowship. In 2011, Collins was granted an NSF CAREER Award. Her research group focuses on fundamental and applied aspects of microbial consortia and combines synthetic biology and engineered cell-cell communication with the complexities of coexisting communities of bacteria. The Collins lab also studies how community behavior by bacteria is affected by microgravity. They recently conducted two spaceflight experiments examining biofilm formation by two opportunistic pathogens, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus.

This talk explores how eating pork in Paris and other cities can be read as a sign of identity crisis in French societya way of excluding others who are different, in this case, Jews or Muslims who follow dietary laws forbidding the consumption of pork.

Pierre Birnbaum is an emeritus professor of political sociology at Université Paris I and currently a visiting scholar at NYU's Tikvah Center for Law & Jewish Civilization. He is an eminent authority on the political history of Jews in France, and on relations between Jews and the State in different contemporary societies. His books include The Jews of the Republic: A History of State Jews from Gambetta to Vichy (Stanford, 1996) and Paths for Emancipation: Jews, States, and Citizenship (Princeton, 1995).

With the passing of North Korean leader Kim Jong Il and the transfer of power to his son, Kim Jong Un, Pyongyang is once again the focus of considerable concern and speculation. Mansfield Foundation Executive Director Gordon Flake will address the prospects for a post-Kim Jong Il North Korea including regime stability, re-emerging concerns about the food situation in the North, the DPRK nuclear program, and inter-Korean relations. He will also discuss the role of regional powers in responding to the transition and outline they key policy questions facing the United States. Mr. Flake joined the Mansfield Foundation in February 1999. He was previously a Senior Fellow and Associate Director of the Program on Conflict Resolution at The Atlantic Council of the United States and prior to that Director for Research and Academic Affairs at the Korea Economic Institute of America.

The talk will be preceded by a screening of the film The Lark Farm that was based on her best-selling novel, La masseria delle allodole (Rizzoli, 2004), translated into English as Skylark Farm (Knopf, 2008). The film, staring Paz Vega and Arsinee Khanjian, was adapted by the legendary Italian filmmakers Paolo and Vittorio Taviani in 2007. The film marks one of the few international features to tackle the Armenian genocide head-on. Drawing on the history of her own recent ancestors it tells of the attempts of the members of an Armenian family caught up in the massacres to escape to Italy and join a relation who had been living there for forty years.

Professor Arslan's second novel, La Strada di Smirne, was published in 2009 by Rizzoli. She translated two volumes of Daniel Varujan's poetry into Italian and edited works on the Armenian genocide and on the experiences of Armenian refugees in Italy. Her most recent works include, Ishtar 2. Cronache dal mio risveglio, Il Cortile dei Girasoli Parlanti and Il Libro di Mush.

The SIPA IFEP Concentration and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Study Center present the 2012 Distinguished Speaker in International Finance and Economic Policy, Tan ChinHwee, co-Head of Asia for Apollo Global Management, on "The Pitfalls and Opportunities of Investing in China and Asia." Professor Merit E. Janow, Director of the IFEP Concentration and Professor in the Practice of International Economic Law and International Affairs, will moderate. Professor David O. Beim, Professor of Professional Practice in Finance and Economics and Bernstein Faculty Leader at the Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. Center for Leadership and Ethics, will offer comments. A reception will follow.

Mr. Tan is the co-Head of Asia for Apollo Global Management, a leading USD72bn global alternative investor. He is voted by the Hedge Fund Journal as among the emerging top 40 absolute return investors globally and is also named as Best Asia Credit Hedge Fund by The Asset. Mr Tan is honored as a World Economic Forum Young Global Leaders 2010 and is a member of the Resource Panel for Government Parliamentary Committee for Finance and Trade and Industry for Singapore government.

Prior to joining Apollo (Singapore), Mr. Tan was a managing director at Amaranth, where he pioneered a number of historic capital market "firsts" in public and private investment opportunities across the capital structure in India, Singapore, Pakistan, Indonesia and Taiwan from June 2003. Prior to joining Amaranth, from September 2001 to May 2003, Mr. Tan worked part-time for Derosa Research and Trading Inc. as a forensic accounting associate while pursuing his MBA education at Yale School of Management on a DBS Bank sponsorship. He received a Bachelor of Accountancy degree and graduated with 2nd Class Upper Honors in 1995 from the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore on a Keppel group sponsorship. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and is both an Australian and Singapore-registered Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and has completed an executive program at Harvard Kennedy School. Mr. Tan speaks fluent Mandarin, Taiwanese and Cantonese and he has taken lessons on Bahasa Indonesia up to intermediary level.

Mr Tan is a Board Member a listed REIT associated with Temasek that has the largest Grade A office space in Singapore. Mr Tan is also a Board Member of the CFA Society in Singapore and Lien Aid, a foundation associated with Nanyang Technological University to address water and sanitation issues in Asia. He volunteered his time with the Monetary Authority of Singapore and Singapore and Indonesia Stock Exchange on Forensic Accounting and is on the global CFA Speaker Retainer Program. He is a Lead Economist at the World Bank's Research Department and a Research Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA, Bonn). During his World Bank career, he has also served as Deputy Chief Economist for Latin America and the Caribbean, and as Co-Director of the World Development Report 2006, on Equity and Development. He has published widely in the fields of poverty, inequality, and the political economy of development. He has been awarded the Adriano Romariz Duarte and the Haralambos Simeonides Prizes by the Brazilian Economic Economic and Econometric Societies, among others. He was born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil, and holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the London School of Economics.

A case study in Senegal."

Geraldine Duthe, Institut national d'etudes demographiques, and Visiting Scholar to the Columbia Population Research Center and the Department of Population and Family Health, Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, and Stephane Helleringer, Assistant Professor, Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health, will present work entitled, "Counting maternal deaths in sub-Saharan Africa. A case study in Senegal."

Reducing maternal mortality is one of the Millennium Goals for Development. However, measuring maternal mortality levels and trends in sub-Saharan Africa, the region with the highest burden of maternal deaths, represents a big challenge in the absence of reliable statistics on causes of death. To do so, demographers increasingly rely on retrospective survey data on the mortality of a respondent's sisters, but the validity and reliability of these data are uncertain. In 2010, we conducted a validation study in a small population in Senegal where mortality had been continuously monitored for the past 40 years. We matched each retrospective report of a sibling's survival to its prospective record. This presentation is devoted to presenting the results of this study, which points out that maternal deaths are frequently omitted by survey respondents. We draw the major implications of these findings and present the collaborative project we initiated to try and improve maternal mor! tality estimates in developing countries.

"Ice Supersaturated Regions from Global Aircraft Observations: New Insights into Cirrus Cloud Formation"

Cirrus clouds have large but highly uncertain impacts on Earth's climate. Cirrus cloud formation requires supersaturation of the relative humidity with respect to ice (RHi), and in that regard, ice supersaturated regions are the birthplaces of cirrus clouds. However, relatively little is known about the scales, magnitudes, and mechanisms of the precursor ice supersaturated regions that form cirrus clouds. Sampling in the upper troposphere by itself is challenging, water vapor measurements may be biased by sampling and calibration artifacts, and clouds form at scales much smaller than model grid boxes or remote sensing measurements. We have developed a fast (25 Hz), accurate (6%), and precise (<1%) open-path vertical cavity laser hygrometer that flies routinely on the NSF Gulfstream-V research aircraft. Here we use the first global yet high-resolution aircraft-based observations to show that ice supersaturated regions are very small (km), nearly two orders of magnitude smaller than previous measurements. In addition, RHi spatial variability is dominated by water vapor inhomogeneities, as opposed to temperature anomalies, on scales from 200 m to 100 km. These results are in sharp contrast to the frequent assumption that temperature variability drives RHi variability at cloud scales. By examining tracer/tracer correlations and other microphysical parameters, we show that while adiabatic lift and cooling is important on the synoptic scale, it is the highly variable water vapor field that is most important to cirrus cloud formation at cloud scales.

Professor Liverman will discuss, "Future Earth" - a new 10-year initiative which aims to deliver knowledge to enable societies to meet their sustainable development goals in the coming decades. Created by an alliance that includes ICSU and its global change programs, the International Social Science Council (ISSC), the Belmont Forum (a high level group of major funders of global environmental change research) and UNEP, UNU, UNESCO, and WMO, Future Earth seeks to reinvigorate international global change research as an enterprise that links natural and social science, science and stakeholders, and environmental research to development agendas. Prof. Liverman will reflect on the challenges that have faced integrated international programs to date, based on experience with several ICSU programs, and share the conceptual frameworks and initial priorities of Future Earth. ICSU seeks to engage the international global change research community in this endeavor and welcomes comments!

This conference seeks to draw on research and practice in a public forum to discuss the trends in the relations between American business and politics. The keynote speaker is Professor Raghuram Rajan of the University of Chicago, former chief economist at the IMF.

Politics and Business appear to more intertwined than ever because politics is so salient and ubiquitous in the current American drama in the aftermath of the financial crisis and the policy debates over health, the budget, and regulatory reform policies. The popular charges are contradictory: politics and politicians intervene in business and the economy according to some, while others claim business intervenes, often by non-transparent means, in politics. We are in an age in which corporations and unions are given first ame! ndment rights while political donations are veiled behind non-profit organizations (the 527'). Lobbying is viewed as information' by many, but as legal corruption' by others. The financial crisis has surely rendered these issues more salient, where the stakes riding on regulation are reshuffling the flow of money and contributions, while a listless public shows signs of an activism missing from American public discourse for a few decades.

This conference seeks to draw on research and practice in a public forum to discuss the trends in the relations between American business and politics. The keynote speaker is Professor Raghuram Rajan of the University of Chicago, former chief economist at the IMF, whose recent book Fault Lines places the origins of the financial crisis on a thesis of failed government policies to address poverty by a wayward intervention in mortgage markets coupled with a financial sector that successfully lobbied for deregulation and yet failed to self-govern. The subsequent panels consist of academics who will explain and debate what their research says about this thesis of an intervening government that misused markets for social policies and a business sector that influenced government policies to deregulate, and sometimes subsidize, their activities. The final panel is led by a prominent journalist and consists of those at the front-line of these issues.

An interdisciplinary group of leading scholars and artists re-examines the story of the Russian avant-garde.

The conference brings together an interdisciplinary group of scholars and artists to re-examine the story of the Russian avant-garde. The panels, talks and screenings will treat seminal and lesser-known works from a wide range of media, including literature, the visual arts, architecture, dance, film, and theater. Key issues to be explored will be the formation of the historical avant-garde; its appropriation by both official and dissident culture; influence on contemporary Russian culture; avant-garde theory; and the Russian avant-garde's dissemination abroad. By examining the seemingly paradoxical "traditions" of the avant-garde, we hope to raise broader questions about art practice and the cu! ltural heritage of the twentieth century.
