The exhibit "ZATO - Secret Soviet Cities during the Cold War", curated by Xenia Vytuleva, explores the dynamics between politics, urbanism, and cartographic manipulation.

ZATO - Secret Soviet Cities During the Cold War, curated by Xenia Vytuleva, explores the dynamics between politics, urbanism, and cartographic manipulation.

Nameless, not shown on maps, ZATO were sites of highly secretive military and scientific research and production. Built in the remote areas of the Soviet Empire, they followed a unique architectural program - inspired by ideal cities, based on perfect geometric plans, articulated by progressive modernist architectural language, reflecting the ideology of the Party. However, these "realized utopias" were camouflaged and blurred into the environment (even today some of the sites are blocked on Google Earth). Moreover, their essential isolation from the entire Soviet context, including special food and consumer supplements given as rewards for the secrecy and "otherness" of the sites, had an unexpected impact on ZATO's cityscape.

Today there are 43 ZATO on the territory of the Russian Federation. Their future is uncertain: some may survive; others may disappear as urban formations within the context of Russian suburbs. It may happen that their existence will no longer be a metaphor, nor a fact. The exhibition at the Harriman Institute and the related forthcoming publication aim to contextualize the ZATO phenomenon within a larger socio-political and artistic discourse that uses archival resources that, until this case study, have never before been viewed.

On display: ZATO archival materials, camouflage maps of strategic sites, secret diagrams of changing ZATO names/ numbers, ZATO passports, photographs by Richard Pare.

ICARUS III follows on the highly successful ICARUS I and II conferences organized at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and the University of Michigan's School of Natural Resources and Environment. The theme of the ICARUS III meeting is "Scales, Frameworks and Metrics."

The Initiative on Climate Adaptation Research and Understanding through the Social Sciences is an effort to bring together scholars, researchers, students, decision makers, and activists interested in working on adaptation to climate variability and change. Members of the initiative are particularly interested in social-scientific and humanistic approaches to understanding climate-related vulnerabilities, risks, and human and ecosystem responses to vulnerability and risks over time and across scales.

ICARUS charges a registration fee to offset expenses. The fee schedule is: Employed people from developed countries: US$40. Employed people from developing countries: US$20. Caitlin B. Petre (New York University): "Interviewing the Interviewer: The Challenges and Opportunities of Questioning Journalists"

Social scientists are trained to steer interviewees away from "scripted" accounts so the researcher can figure out what they really think and feel. But how do you interview a subject who interviews people for a living? This was the challenge that confronted Caitlin Petre, a sociology PhD candidate at NYU, as she set out to study how journalists use audience metrics in their work. Petre will talk about her efforts to get access and build rapport with reporters, editors, bloggers and analysts at top print and online news organizations, during a time when their professional lives are busier and more unstable than ever. She will explore the cultural variations between academia and journalism that can lead to different understandings of what an interview is and is good for. Finally, at a moment when reporters and scholars alike are trying to understand the rapid changes in the news media, Petre will discuss what interviews with journalists can reveal.

Nikki Usher (George Washington University): "Ethnography in a Time of Big Newsroom Uncertainty"

Just two weeks before starting research at The New York Times, Nikki Usher was confronted with some sad news from the newsroom: unprecedented staff reductions. The newsroom's reaction: no, you can't come and do research. The story ended happily, but not so much for other attempts at research in other newsrooms. Dr. Usher will bring her experiences of doing research (or at least trying to) at some of the biggest newsrooms in the country, giving a sense of why some newsrooms have difficulty understanding the mission of newsroom field research, and why some newsrooms seem open to having visitors. The underlying ethics of this relationship between newsrooms and researchers will be explored through a conversation about NDAs, review rights, and the like.

Valerie Belair-Gagnon (City University, London): "Beyond the Physicality of the BBC Newsroom(s)"

In 2011, Valerie Belair-Gagnon undertook an ethnographic study of the BBC newsroom. She was researching BBC news production when the Arab Spring unfolded. From her observations of the BBC news process, Belair-Gagnon considers this event a watershed moment for ethnographers and journalists. The newsroom organization and configuration were transformed during this period, and the examples she will use demonstrate how journalists are increasingly tapped into social media spaces, conducting journalism beyond traditional boundaries.

With over ten years of experience spearheading the sustainability industry, she is a recognized leader skilled at helping people, companies, buildings, and communities to implement and benefit from sustainability-focused solutions.

An architect by training, Yarmuth applies her diverse project experience and whole-systems perspective to enable teams of people to develop creative approaches to realize greater success in their work. This process draws upon Yarmuth's skills in teaching, facilitating an integrative process, and inspiring people to engage with their work and surroundings in more meaningful ways.

Super-Resolution Fluorescence Imaging by dSTORM

Fluorescence microscopy allows the direct observation of cellular processes with molecular specificity and high temporal resolution in three dimensions. Due to the wave nature of light, however, the spatial resolution had been limited to about half of the wavelength of the light in the imaging plane, significantly larger than most cellular structures. Only recently methods emerged that enable super-resolution imaging with substantially improved optical resolution. Super-resolution imaging methods nowadays can provide a spatial resolution that is well below the diffraction limit and close to a near-molecular resolution. They can be applied to biological samples, and provide new and exciting views on the structural organization of cells and the dynamics of biomolecular assemblies on wide timescales.

Direct stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy (dSTORM) has attracted considerable interest because it offers a comparatively simple way to achieve an optical resolution of 15-20 nm in the imaging plane using standard, commercially available fluorescent probes. We explain the principles and requirements of single-molecule based localization microscopy with focus on dSTORM with standard organic dyes, compare different super-resolution imaging concepts and highlight their strengths and limitations with respect to applications in fixed and living cells. Synthetic fluorophores have a comparably small size, are available in many colors spanning the whole spectrum, and can easily be chemically modified and used for stoichiometric labeling of proteins in live cells. Because of their brightness, their photostability and their ability to be operated as photoswitchable fluorophores even in living cells under physiological conditions they have the potential to substantially accelerate the broad application of live-cell super-resolution imaging methods.

Besides different examples demonstrating the improved resolution of dSTORM, we introduce the nuclear pore complex (NPC), which controls all traffic of molecules in and out of the nucleus, as ideal model structure to control the quality of chromatic aberration corrections and to test the capability and reliability of super-resolution imaging methods. Generating accumulated super-resolved images from hundreds of NPCs we reveal a diameter of the central NPC channel of 41 ± 7 nm and demonstrate that the integral membrane protein gp210 is distributed in an eightfold radial symmetry. Two-color dSTORM experiments emphasize the highly symmetric structure of NPCs with a lateral resolution of ~ 15 nm.

The Earth Institute's International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) presents, "Evaluating, Improving and Promoting Effective Use of Satellite Rainfall Products." This seminar explores ways to evaluate, improve, promote and use satellite rainfall products.

Tufa Dinku, research scientist at IRI, will discuss the various satellite rainfall products are used in different applications at IRI and many other places across the world. These products are particularly critical over parts of the world where rain gauge networks are very sparse or non-existent, and where available data are not accessible. The quality of the different satellite products varies from one product to another and from one climatic region to another. Rigorous validation is required in order to understand the performance of these products under different climate conditions. Efforts have been made at IRI to evaluate different satellite rainfall products, particularly over different parts of Africa. One finding from these evaluations has been that combining satellite rainfall products with rain gauge measurements would improve the satellite products significantly. Thus, we have been exploring different ways to combine satellite rainfall estimates with ground observations. On the other hand, we have also been making efforts to promote the use of satellites products and local observations for improving climate services in Africa. All these efforts have contributed to better understanding, improvement and better use of satellite products.
