As an academic, you will be asked to comment on news articles, consult with private corporations, or even contribute to legal briefs and testify in court. We'll discuss issues of ethics, compensation, and controversies surrounding the role of the chemist, the historian, the sociologist, the psychologist, the political scientist, etc., in public disputes. We'll discuss the precautionary, real case study of what happened to graduate students who assisted in research used by their faculty who served as expert witnesses in recent tobacco litigation.
