Ways to study the sex differences

PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scan:
-can pinpoint in color the regions of the brain where neurons are working during a particular task.
-utilizes radiopharmaceuticals which are incorporated into the functioning neurons and are then tracked by a radiation detector.

fMRI (Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging) -uses magnetic resonance imaging techniques to study function of the brain by looking at variations in oxygen levels in the brain. -neural activity in the brain causes an increase of blood flow to the local vasculature which in turn causes a decrease in oxygen concentration at these sites. This oxygen variation is used to study the brain function. For example, the scientist can see which area of the brain is used to perform a given task.
