Course Requirements

1. Attendance and class participation: This is not a lecture class, and as such, attendance and active participation are necessary for you to have a rewarding experience in this course. Consequently, your participation will play a role in your final evaluation. The quantity and quality of class participation of each student will be noted each session. However your participation will not be included in your grade numerically. Rather, borderline grades will be decided using, in part, my assessment of your class participation. Obviously, if you are not present in class, you cannot participate, so repeated absence will negatively affect your final grade. According to CC policy, having more than four unexcused absences is grounds for being dropped from the course.

2. Reading responses: You are required to write five short (one-page) papers in response to readings. The only constraint on the subject of each paper is that it be directed to the reading assigned for the date on which the paper is turned in. You are free to explore a single paragraph of the text, or consider the place of that text relative to all the texts we have read before, or consider a scope somewhere in between. The short papers must be typed. They will not be graded, however I might deem a paper unacceptable and request another. You may not hand in more than one short paper for a given day, and you must have turned in at least one short paper before the first of the longer papers is due.

3. Papers: Two papers of 5-7 pages will be required. Questions will be handed out more than a week before the due dates, which are listed below in the schedule.

4. Examinations: There will be one midterm examination and a final examination. Each will consist of some passage identification as well as essay questions. The dates of the exams are in the schedule below.

Approximate requirement percentages of total grade:

Papers 40% (20% each)

Midterm Exam 20%

Final Exam 30%

Reading questions 10%
