James and all:

The .ppt on modeling vegetation response to climate change "Lect15_ClChange&veg.ppt", which I showed at the May BRF meeting, requires that animations of model results (.avi files) be properly linked for these 'movies' to run.

The .ppt file

-------------

The .ppt file is on the SEE-U site, under 'Lecture Archive' then under 'Future Vegetation Change' or at: http://www.columbia.edu/itc/cerc/seeu/lecture_files/ppt/vegchange_lect.ppt.

Note that the file name is different than what I used above (won't make any difference). This file is large (5.4M) so be careful downloading it over slow lines. It should be on the local servers once the web site is loaded there.

A .pdf version

--------------

I've attached a much more compact version (a .pdf) if you want to review the content of the file without having to download the original fle. This also requires linkage to the .avi files for the 'movies' to run.

James-- The pfd version could be run off the 'Lecture Archive' webpage without it and the avi files being first downloaded to and linked on the client computer! Once the .pdf file is linked to the .avi files on the website, the movies are viewable from any machine. This would be an easy way for students to view the presentation on their own.

How to link the .avi's to .ppt and .pdf files is given below.

Linking the .avi's to the .ppt file

-----------------------------------

These are the steps to set up movies for the .ppt file:

1) First time around, download the 2 .avi files from the site: http://www.cgd.ucar.edu/edas/tim/epob.htm.

The files are under ANIMATIONS. Download either the uncompressed or ZIP'd file. You don't need the 'color bar' files. The 2 files are: vgat_pptxC1SuC.AVI vgat_arbuC1SuC.AVI

These files are also large (5.4 and 3.8M). Once they're downloaded onto the SEE-U website then they'll be on the local servers. If you grabbed the zip'd files, unzip them.

2) My suggestion is to put these files in the same directory (folder) as the .ppt file.

3) Test to see if the 'movies' run in the .ppt file:

a) Go to Slide 13, and then repeat process for Slide 15

b) In 'Normal' or 'Slide View' view mode, Right click on the maps, Choose 'Play Movie'

c) If the animation runs then you're all set, if it doesn't then you'll get a warning--Go to Step 4.

4) The warning will say "The linked media file <...> is unavailable. Do you want to locate it yourself?" Say 'Yes'

5) Navigate to the folder and appropriate .avi file:

a) for the first movie slide (Slide 13), select 'vgat_pptxC1SuC.AVI'

b) for the 2nd (Slide 15), select 'vgat_arbuC1SuC.AVI'

It may take a short bit while it loads the file.

6) Test by returning to Step 3; or by going into 'Slide Show' view mode -- when you page to Slides 13 and 15 they should automatically go into the animation.

7) Save the .ppt file

Linking the .avi's to the .pdf file

-----------------------------------

1) Follow Step 1 for .ppt linking (above) to get the 2 .avi files.

2) Put the .avi files in the same folder as the .pdf file. I think this is all that's needed for proper linking, but I haven't tested it on other machines. This will be critical if you only have Acrobat Reader. If you have _Adobe Acrobat_, you'll be able to save any re-navigation to the files.

3) Test to see if the 'movies' run in the .pdf file:

a) open the pdf (in Adobe Acrobat, if you have it)

b) page to Slide 13, and repeat for Slide 15

c) as per the red text annotation, move the cursor over the maps (cursor should turn into a film strip cursor) and left click. Movies should run. If it can't find the .avi, it may take a while and then come up with a warning--Go to Step 4.

4) The warning will ask you if you want to locate the movie file. In the navigation window, select the file type to be all movie files (.mov, .avi). Select the appropriate file as in Step 5 for .ppt linking.

5) If you have Adobe Acrobat, you can save the file with the new link. If you have only Acrobat Reader, you're out of luck (check that the avi's are in the same folder as the pdf).

Good luck. Let me know if you have any questions or problems.

Tim
