(1)Diagnostic exam this week. Recitations next week
This standardized national examination will not be used in computing the term
grade. However, an exceptional score might decide a borderline computation
in your favor. If you have not taken the diagnostic exam please contact Socky
Logo (sl27@columbia.edu). She'll give you instructions on how to be assigned
a time and place to take the exam.

to be covered in Chapters 1, 2 and 3.
(3) A copy of the "Elements Big Bang Movie" will be available in the Chemistry
computer room (211 Havemeyer) on a CD. You are welcome to copy it (ca 250
M), but please do not distribute it.
(4) There will typically be a powerpoint presentation (ppt) and other IT materials
available for some of the topics covered in each of the lectures.
(5) For the next five lectures before exam 1 the tentative Chapter coverage is:
Monday September 12: Chapter 1; Wednesday September 14: Chapters 1 and 2;
Monday September 19: Chapter 2; Wednesday September 21: Chapters 2 and 3;
Monday September 26: Chapter 3; Wednesday September 28: Exam 1.
The homework assignment are listed under the "Chapter Syllabus" menu. You should complete the homework assignment in advance of the lecture. Homework is not collected but should be discussed in recitation sections. A solutions manual for the assigned odd numbered problems is available in the book store.
