Web Assignment :Greenhouse Gases

Trends in hemispheric mean annual temperature, journalistically characterized as "global warming" and increasing ppm atmospheric CO2 suggests a casual relationship generally known as the "greenhouse effect" Although clearly the most (in)famous, there are many important greenhouse gases other than CO2. Using the Internet as your primary source of information, identify and characterize a greenhouse gas other than the principal examples discussed in class - CO2 H2O, and CH4.

Consider yourself to be a journalist(as well as a C1404 student) reporting on this molecule. Your assignment is to write a 250 word news article on this molecule and its impact on the environment. Your report should include a description of the general chemical and physical properties of this molecule, and a discussion of how these properties lead the molecule to be characterized as a greenhouse gas. Reference web-sites you use.(References are not included in the 250 word count).

Based on your web search , select the one site you felt was particularly informative, well organized, relevant to topic, and visually appealing. E-mail the url of this website to your reception TA. No later than 5pm on January 29th.We will screen all web-sites submitted and select the "top ten" web sites based on the same criteria.

The "top ten" list of web sites will be posted on the course home page by 5pm on Monday, February 4. On Wednesday/Thursday, February 6/7, there will be a web-based discussion on greenhouse gases and the environment using a selection of web-sites from the "top-ten" list to guide the discussion. So as to be prepared for this discussion you should screen the material in all ten web sites.

Grading

Your report is worth 4% of your final grade in the course. If your web-site is selected as one of the top ten sites you will receive 2% extra credit. Decision of the judges in the selection of the top ten is final.
