Thick
walls were deemed an undesirable means of dividing space in Japanese architecture.
Space, light, and lines of vision can be manipulated through the use of
screens, sliding doors, and en or verandas. The porch, which
is sheltered by the overhanging eaves of the building opens to the garden
or street and belongs to both the outside and the inside. It serves
as a transition and a link.
