Analysis of the Garden

The movement within

As illustrated in the diagram above, the arrangement of the rocks generally leads the viewers' sight from the left to the right.  The biggest rock in size makes the group of three in the left.  As the big rock slopes to the right, it leads the viewers' gaze to the same direction.  The group of five in the back lies low to elongate the horizon of the viewer, and incorporate the wall as the predominant horizontal in the garden view.  This group also serves as the counter-balance to the sweeping rightward movement, as it leans slightly to the left.  As a conclusion, the viewers' eyes meet another group of five on the right, which continues the dynamic of the composition leading it to the right.  Finally, the group of two in front echoes the movement of the group of five, finishing the complete movement in this quiet garden.  In such a way, the asymmetric composition achieves a certain balance, creating energy in the midst of subtlety.

Balance

The balance is not only maintained in the positioning of the stones in the garden, but also in the arrangement of the groups themselves.  The above picture shows the largest group of three in the farthest left.  The two low-lying stones provides support to the big stone in the middle, giving the group stability. In the two groups of twos, we see the long shapes of the stones themselves give stability to the sets.  A similar arrangement as the big group is observed in the other groups as well.

Rhythm

Rhythm is achieved in the composition by arranging the stones in alternate heights.  This not only makes it interesting for the viewers to watch, but also reiterates the dynamic created in the movement in the composition.

Harmony

As each stone is carefully planted in their own positions, we realize the importance of coherence and harmony in the design of garden.  Each factor - position, height and color - is taken into consideration to create a harmonized environment.  Every single element in the garden becomes the key element in the design. Even colors and texture of the wall imitates those of the stones; thus, creating a calm and balanced for the appreciation of the viewers.
