Plagiarism and Academic Dishonesty
Plagiarism and academic dishonesty are serious offenses at Columbia. Although it is the student's responsibility to understand Columbia's policies about these matters, here is a summary of what the University considers plagiarism and academic dishonesty:

1. Submitting essays or portions of essays written by other people and not acknowledging them as such.
2. Failing to acknowledge through proper citation the words and ideas of others.
3. Failing to indicate paraphrases or ideas or verbatim expressions not one's own through the proper use of quotations or footnotes.
4. Collaboration on an assignment or examination without specific permission from the instructor.
