Course Requirements

Discussion Sections:
Mandatory for undergraduates. Assignments in addition to those listed below.

 

  1. Journal. Notes about each film screened in class (due at midterm and at last class). (10%)


  2. Midterm exam. Take-home. The short essay test will be handed out week number 8 (10/28) and is due week number 9 (11/4). Readings, classroom discussion and films screened in class will be included. (30%)


  3. Final Term Paper. DUE LAST LECTURE. A 15 page paper on one of these subjects:
    1. Historical. Set one of the films or filmmakers (from class screenings) in a historical context.
    2. Sociopolitical. Analyze one of the films from class according to its social and political agendas.
    3. Comparative. Compare a film with other works of art or communication media from its era.
    4. Cine-aesthetic. Choose a film and analyze its cinematic structure. Suggest how structural elements combine to tell the film's story and expresses its point of view. What cinematic elements are relied on for what effect? At least one complete (shot-by-shot) scene analysis must accompany the text. (40%)


  4. Classroom Participation. Be prepared to discuss readings and screenings in the lecture and in discussion sections. (20%)
