Berlin-Berlin Film Series Fall 2000     Billy Wilder's Berlin and Hollywood
      "Billy Wilderıs Berlin and Hollywood" presents a variety of the Austrian-born filmmakerıs best films written and directed in Hollywood at the end of World War II and in the early years of the cold war. All films are in video format and will be preceded by short film clips from a PBS Great Artistıs series "Billy Wilder" to place the evening's film in a broader perspective with regard to Billy Wilderıs historic progression from Berlin to Hollywood.. All viewings will take place at 7:30 p.m. on the specified dates at Deutsches Haus (420 West 116, between Amsterdam and Morningside Drive) and be available thereafter at the Reserve Desk in the Media Center in Lewisohn Hall.

13. September             Double Indemnity
Director: Billy Wilder (107 min., b/w, video, 1944, English)

Drama with Fred MacMurray , Barbara Stanwyck, and Edward G. Robinson. An insurance salesman and a scheming blond persuade her husband to sign a policy that pays double for accidental death - then they plan an accident. One of the great movies of all time with an electric script written by Wilder and Chandler, based on the novel by James M. Cain.

27. September             A Foreign Affair
Director: Billy Wilder(120 min., b/w, video, 1948, English)

Comedy with Jean Arthur, Marlene Dietrich, and John Lund. Upon hearing rumors of unsatisfactory moral behavior amongst American soldiers in occupied Berlin, Congresswoman Frost (Arthur) sends a congressional committee to investigate. Unbeknownst to Frost, the key offender in these immoral actions is appointed by her to lead in the investigations! Comedic situation aplenty in this post-war classic.

11. October             Sunset Boulevard
Director: Billy Wilder and John Seitz ( 120 min., b/w, video, 1950, English)

An aging silent-film queen refuses to allow the sun to set on her career and hires a young screenwriter to help her make a comeback. Academy Award Nominations: 11, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor--William Holden, Best Actress--Gloria Swanson.

25. October             Stalag 17
Director: Hal Pereira, Fanz Bachelin, and Billy Wilder (120 min., b/w, video, 1953, English)

Drama; William Holden plays a cynical sergeant in a World War II P.O.W. camp who is suspected of being a German informer. Humor lightens the story, adapted from the Broadway play by Donald Bevan and Edmund Trzcinski. Academy Awards: Best Actor--William Holden.

8. November             Witness for the Prosecution
Director: Billy Wilder and Russell Harlan (116 min., b/w, video, 1957, English)

Drama with Marlene Dietrich, Tyrone Power, and Charles Laughton; Splendid courtroom drama based on a novel by Agatha Christie. A skillful lawyer who takes on a murder case finds himself entangled in a web of deceit. Academy Award Nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor--Charles Laughton.

15. November             Some Like It Hot
Director: Billy Wilder and Charles Lang (119 min., b/w, video, 1959, English)

Comedy with Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon. Two Struggling musicians witness the St. Valentine's Day Massacre and try to find a way out of the city before they are found and killed by the mob. The only job that will pay their way is an all girl band so the two dress up as women. One falls for another band member but can't tell her his gender, and the other has a rich suitor who will not take "No," for an answer.

29. November             One, Two, Three
Director: Billy Wilder and Daniel Fapp (115 min., b/w, video, 1961, English)

Comedy with James Cagney, Arlene Dahl and Lilo Pulver. A high level Coca Cola executive stationed in West Berlin is distressed to discover that his boss's daughter has married a stolid communist.
