This course deals with the time period which historians have saddled with the rather awkward name of "early modern". As the name suggests, this is a period of transition between the Middle Ages on the one hand and the Modern period on the other. The primary goals of this course are to explore the developments that distinguished the Early Modern period from the Middle Ages, and which also laid the groundwork for modern era.
