2 Papers Each will be worth 25% of your overall grade (50% total). There will
be two paper assignments of about 6-8 pages in length. Each will be a
book review, one of the The Return of Martin Guerre by Natalie Zemon Davis
and the other of The Burgermeister's Daughter by Steven Ozment. You may do the papers in any order that you wish. The first paper will
be due on Oct. 11th and the second on Nov. 29th. Both of these books have
been ordered at Labyrinth Book store, and they are also available on reserve
at Barnard. I have selected these books because they complement each other quite
well as one deals with rural society while the other with town life. More
importantly, though, they bring the individual back into the historical
account. By providing us with a human face, these works will, (I hope)
prove to be a useful counter-weight to the more general narratives of
the other readings and my lectures
Midterm Exam 20% of overall grade. (Oct 23) This exam will be mostly an essay in exam.
It may have a section of short identifications. A study sheet will be
given out ahead of time.
Final Exam 30% of overall grade. (in the exam period) This exam will be cumulative,
though a greater weight will be given to the second half of the course.
It will follow the format of the midterm. A study sheet will be given
out ahead of time. |
