Space Maintainer (laboratory exercise)

Instruments needed:

Orthodontic bands band seater
Alginate band remover
Mixing bowl and spatula band pusher or large amalgam condenser paper clip
impression tray pencil

  1. Fit bands on teeth #K and #T. Bands should be adapted to tooth using band seater and band pusher or a large amalgam condenser.

  2. Check to be sure that the band is adapted into all major grooves of the tooth. Check to see that gingival margin of band is subgingival (but not greater than 1mm subgingival). Check to see that occlusal margin of band is well adapted (perio probe cannot be inserted between band and tooth). Check to see that band does not extend occlusally higher than proximal marginal ridge.

  3. Lubricate the lower arch of the typodont with petroleum jelly.

  4. Mix Alginate, fill the impression tray, and press tray over lower arch of the typodont.

  5. Remove impression when set. Check to see internal details of impression, which should include abutment teeth and lower incisors, bands, and the teeth to be extracted without voids.

  6. Remove bands using a band remover, being careful not to distort bands.

  7. Seat bands completely in impression. (Have instructor check)

  8. Cut a paper clip to lock the bands to the impression.

  9. Pour model of stone.

  10. Separate impression from stone.

  11. Trim model.

  12. With a pencil draw the outline of the lingual arch on the model.

  13. Write the prescription as shown on the respective Surburban lab slip.
