Mission and Four Year Curriculum Outcome Objectives for the Educational Program
 


Mission

The mission of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University is to prepare graduates to be leaders and role models who define excellence in patient care, medical research, education and health care policy. Their experiences at Columbia will enable them to shape the future and set the standards of medicine in the United States and in the world. Their guided exposure and training will prepare them to exhibit the highest principles of humanism and professionalism in their responsibilities to their patients, to their community and to society.

Four Year Curriculum Outcome Objectives:

The faculty in the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University are dedicated to the creation of a learning environment that fosters the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors of physicians who exhibit the highest levels of professional competence. Generation of such a learning environment calls for the faculty to first develop measurable learning objectives and then content. Assessment methodologies must be linked to the objectives. The faculty must assure that the educational program is up-to-date by the appropriate usage of educational innovations and of modifications in the courses in response to evaluation. Graduating medical students must demonstrate mastery of the following competencies that have been identified by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Medical knowledge
Students must demonstrate knowledge about established and evolving biomedical, clinical, and associated sciences (e.g. epidemiological and social-behavioral) and application of this knowledge to the practice of medicine throughout the life cycle. The medical graduate is expected to demonstrate basic knowledge of:
Patient care
Students must be able to provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the treatment of illness and the promotion of health. The medical graduate is expected to:
Interpersonal and Communication skills
Students must display interpersonal and communication skills that foster effective information exchange and build rapport with patients, their families, and professional associates. The medical graduate is expected to:
Professionalism
Students must demonstrate a commitment to the highest standards of professional responsibility, adherence to ethical principles, and sensitivity in all interactions with patients, families, colleagues, and others with whom physicians must interact in their professional lives. The medical graduate is expected to:
Practice-based learning
Students must be able to examine and evaluate their patient care practices, appraise and assimilate scientific evidence, and use this information to improve their abilities. The medical graduate is expected to:
Systems-based practice
Students must demonstrate knowledge of and responsiveness to the larger context of health care and the ability to effectively call on system resources to provide care that is of optimal value to the health of the individual and of the community. The medical graduate is expected to:
