WIC PROGRAM (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN)

A mother's nutritional status is a major influence on the health of the newborn and the mother. Proper nutrition and health care are particularly important during critical stages of growth and development of young children. Today, more than 3.5 million low-income women and children across the country benefit from the Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). In New York State, WIC currently serves more than 400,000 participants each month.

The WIC supplemental foods, along with nutrition education and appropriate health care, can help prevent the early development or progression of serious nutritional problems in pregnant women, infants, and children. The provision of these services gives WIC the ability to really make a difference.
