TRAINING OVERVIEW

Community Pediatrics training is an opportunity for residents to focus on core concepts of community pediatrics including community health, cultural competency, and legislative advocacy. By the end of three years of training, pediatric residents will:

• be able to look at health from the population perspective
• understand social determinants of health
• learn principles of maternal child health
• improve communication skills and learn basic tenets of health literacy
• be introduced to the concepts of legislative advocacy

TRAINING METHODOLOGY

Multiple educational methodologies will be used throughout residency:

1) Service-Learning is a structured learning experience that combines community service with explicit learning objectives, preparation, and reflection. The resident will visit multiple community-based programs that are at the core of community child health. Following the S-L methodology residents will:

• Learn about the agency and the context in which the service is being provided.
• Provide service to the clients of the program, mostly in the form of health education.
• Learn from the community workers at each program and become aware of the cultural underpinnings of the service being offered at the site.

Residents will visit multiple community sites throughout their years of training.

2) Self-directed modules:
Topics such as Communication skills, Health literacy , Legislative advocacy, and Entitlements will be taught through web-based power point presentations, readings, and written exercises.

3) Narrative medicine:
Residents will read assigned books and discuss at debriefing.
