	• Primary pollutant, emitted by combustion of fuels containing sulfur; also metal smelting • Irritates upper respiratory tract • Converted in atmosphere to acid sulfates • Emissions reductions by building taller smoke stacks, installing scrubbers, or by reducing sulfur content of fuel being burned
