ARTICOLO DETERMINATIVO – USI

Unlike English, the definite article is required in Italian in the following cases:

1. before nouns used in a general sense or to indicate a whole category:

La generosità è una virtù. =Generosity is a virtue.

A molti non piacciono gli spinaci. = Many don’t like spinach.

2. before names of languages, unless directly preceded by a form of “parlare” or “studiare”:

Ho dimenticato il francese. = I forgot French.

La signora Javier parla spagnolo e tedesco. = Mrs. Javier speaks Spanish and German.

3. with proper names accompanied by a title or an adjective:

Il signor Bandelli vuole andare a Chicago e San Francisco = Mr. Bandelli wants to go to Chicago and SF.

Il piccolo Franco, però, vuole andare a Disneyland. = Little Franco, however, wants to go to Disneyland.

4. with days of the week to indicate a routine event:

Il martedì ho lezione di matematica.

Il sabato pomeriggio vado in palestra.
