9. Mass execution of righteous men on the Butovsk Range
on the outskirts of Moscow during the 1930s

T
hroughout the century, mass executions were carried out in the Butovsk range. In this historically tragic site, tens of thousands were killed, including thousands of clergy. Those condemned were brought here by night, shot dead and buried in mass graves. A cross and a wooden temple have been erected in Butovsk to commemorate these martyrs. Since only a few of the names of those who died here are known and since this scene intends to depict mass suffering, no names appear in this sequence. Consistent with other scenes in the icon, the martyrs here are dressed in bright garments and the old men are blessing the executioners as a sign of fearlessness and faith. Inside the ditches or mass graves, the martyrs are dressed in pink, dark red, green and violet chasubles. Color here designates their holy passage into eternal life.
