In this course we will explore the use of GIS in urban planning applications.  Students will gain practical hands-on experience in using popular desktop GIS software, finding spatial data for projects, and the analysis and presentation of spatial data.  During the course students will work with both environmental and socioeconomic data in creating a GIS for a land use-planning project.  Lectures will supplement the labs and explore the underlying geographic and computer concepts behind GIS systems.

The focus of this course is to give you an understanding of the capabilities of using GIS for urban planning problems; develop skills in using GIS software and learn how to incorporate GIS into presentations.  Students will become proficient users of popular GIS software programs such as ArcView GIS, Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst and Image Analysis and become familiar with customized GIS applications for urban and regional planning.  Grades are based on exercises, a final project and class participations.
