The first semester of Literature Humanities is intended to introduce you to some of the works that have had a significant influence on Western culture from Homer to the Bible. Class meetings will combine lecture and discussion formats, paying close attention to the form and content of each work, as well as the historical and cultural context in which it was produced. This section is not intended to celebrate Great Men and Great Works, but rather to consider critically how certain thinkers continue to play a formative role in what we know as "Western civilization" in the late twentieth century.
