On-Line Assignment

1. Read the on-line excerpt "The Speech of the Laws" from Plato's dialogue Crito.
2. In your own words, summarize three reasons why Socrates should obey the Laws. (You might find it helpful to open a text-editing program such as Notepad or Simple Text.)
3. For each of the three reasons, cite the text in the standard method using Stephanus numbers.
4. Pick the most convincing reason and write one objection to it. Be more creative than Crito, who states that "There is no help, Socrates." [52d]
5. Post your assignment to the course bulletin board. (Find the thread entitled "Philosophy Assignment" and then click "New Posting". In the "Subject" heading, give your assignment a title that will make people want to read it. Then simply cut and paste your text from the notepad into the form provided.)
