{1160,1}

har chand .sarf-e ;Gam hai;N le dil jigar se jaa;N tak
lekin kabhuu shikaayat aa))ii nahii;N zabaa;N tak

1) although they're all in the use/employment of grief, from the heart and liver up to the life
2) still/'but' a complaint never came as far as the tongue

Notes:

.sarf : 'Use, employment; expending; expenditure'. (Platts p.744)

S. R. Faruqi:

.sarf-e ;Gam hai;N = are in the custody of grief, in the grip of grief

The opening-verse is by way of introduction. But the joining together of everything 'from the heart and liver up to the life' is not without pleasure.

The zila between chand (meaning 'some, how many') and .sarf (meaning 'expenditure') is also interesting.

FWP:

SETS
MOTIFS == LIVER
NAMES
TERMS == ZILA

Note for grammar fans: In the first line, that le is short for le kar , as part of the structure 'from this to that' [is se le kar us tak].

Note for translation fans: Normally lekin can be translated almost perfectly as 'but'. Here it's better to go for 'still', to get around the fact in English usage we can't say 'Although X, but Y'.
