1) oh, your signs are created in breaths and horizons

 
ay anfus-o-aafaaq me;N paidaa tire aayaat
the truth is that your Self is alive and established  
;haq yih hai kih hai zindah-o-paayindah tirii ;zaat
     

2) how would I have understood whether you are, or are not?

 
mai;N kaise samajhtaa kih tuu hai yaa kih nahii;N hai
changing at every moment were the perspectives of wisdom  
har dam muta;Gaiyir the ;xirad ke na:zariyyaat
     
3) he was not acquainted with the primal lute of nature--
 
ma;hram nahii;N fi:trat ke sarod-e azalii se
whether he would be a star-gazer, or a knower of vegetation!  
biinaa-e kavaakab ho kih daanaa-e nabaataat !
     
4) today when the eye saw, then that world became proved!
 
aaj aa;Nkh ne dekhaa to vuh ((aalam hu))aa ;saabit !
which I had considered to be the babbling of the church  
mai;N jis ko samajhtaa thaa kaliisaa ke ;xaraafat

5) we are captives, pinioned in the bondage of night and day

you are the creator of ages and the overseer of moments

ik baat agar mujh ko ijaazat ho to puuchhuu;N

guftaar ke asluub pah qaabuu nahii;N rahtaa
when within the spirit thoughts would be in collision

9) which Adam is it by whom you are worshiped?
 
vuh kaun-saa aadam hai kih tuu jis kaa hai ma((buud ?
that Adam of dust, who is under the heavens?  
vuh aadam-e ;xaakii kih jo hai zer-e samaavaat ?
     
10) the lords of the east-- messengers of the Europeans!
 
mashriq ke ;xudaavand safiiraan-e firangii !
the lords of the west-- shining metals!  
ma;Grib ke ;xudaavand dara;xshandah filizzaat !
     
11) in Europe, there's much radiance of knowledge and skill
 
yuurap me;N bahut raushanii-e ((ilm-o-hunar hai
the truth is that this darkness is without the fountain of life!  
;haq yih hai kih be-chashmah-e ;haivaa;N hai yih :zulmaat !
     
12) in attractiveness of structure, in liveliness, in purity
 
ra((naa))ii-e ta((miir me;N raunaq me;N .safaa me;N
bank buildings are a good bit ahead of churches!  
girjo;N se kahii;N ba;Rh ke hai;N banko;N kii ((imaaraat !
     
13) outwardly it's trade, in reality it's a gambling-game
 
:zaahir me;N tijaarat hai ;haqiiqat me;N juvaa hai
the profit for one is, for hundreds of thousands, sudden death!  
suud ek kaa laakho;N ke liye marg-e mufaajaat !
     
14) this knowledge, this wisdom, this deliberation, these dominions!
 
yih ((ilm yih ;hikmat yih tadabbur yih ;hukuumat !
they drink blood, they give instruction in equality!  
piite hai;N lahuu dete hai;N ta((liim-e musaavaat !

15) unemployment and nakedness and wine-drinking and poverty
 
be-kaarii-o-((uryaanii-o-mai-;xvaarii-o-aflaas
are the triumphs of European civilization few?  
kyaa kam hai;N firangii madaniyyat ke futuu;haat ?
     
16) that community that would be unacquainted with the blessings of heaven
 
vuh qaum kih fai.zaan-e samaavii se ho ma;hruum
the limit of its accomplishments is lightning/electricity and fog/steam!  
;had us ke kamaalaat kii hai barq-o-bu;xaaraat !
     
17) it's death for the heart, the rule of machines
 
hai dil ke liye maut mashiino;N kii ;hukuumat !
tools trample underfoot the feeling of compassion!  
a;hsaas-e muruvvat ko kuchal dete hai;N aalaat !
     
18) some few signs can be seen that finally
 
a;saar to kuchh kuchh na:zaar aate hai;N kih aa;xir
the trickster of fate has checkmated contrivance  
tadbiir ko taqdiir ke shaa:tir ne kiyaa maat
     
19) in the foundation of the wine-house, an earthquake has come
 
mai-;xaane kii bunyaad me;N aayaa hai tazalzul
the elders of the wine-house have sat down to deliberate on this very thing  
bai;The hai;N isii fikr me;N piiraan-e ;xaraabaat
     
20) the redness that can be seen on faces, at the beginning of the evening,
 
chahro;N pah jo sur;xii na:zar aatii hai sar-e shaam
it's either rouge, or the miracles of glass and flagon  
yaa ;Gaazah hai yaa saa;Gar-o-miinaa kii karaamaat
     
21) you are powerful and just, but in your world
 
tuu qaadir-o-((aadil hai magar tere jahaa;N me;N
the circumstances of working captives are very harsh

22) when will the boat of capital-worship sink?
 
kab ;Duubegaa sarmaayah-parastii kii safiinah ?
your world is awaiting the day of retribution!
