Introduction to Human Rights Fall 2001
First of Two Essays. October 9, 2001
Essay is due October 23 (note change in due date). It counts 20% of course grade.


Please write an up to 6-page maximum (standard double spaced) essay on Parts I and II, following the guidelines on topic area and subject matter spelled out below, and basing your answer on the materials (readings, lextures, etc.) of this course.


Frame and answer an opening question or hypothesis regarding the credibility of the vision of the human as born free and equal in rights, by referring briefly to the:

  1. arguments of four thinkers (including one or two non-Western) whose work appears to support that vision in its own ways (maximum two pages);
  2. arguments of four thinkers whose work appears to reject that vision (maximum two pages);
  3. outlooks of those supporting and those trying to head off recognition of human rights in the UN Charter (maximum two pages).

Undergraduates may write this first paper in teams of two persons, if they wish, submitting their joint work together in identical papers and noting their collaborator's name.
