The course is divided into two main parts: the first will cover theory and the second application.  The main thrust of the course is the role of governments in the economies of their nations.  We will begin by discussing the various reasons why governments exist and what they can do that other private entities would not be able to do, all from the perspective of an economist.  Thus, we will discuss the various things that fall under the term "market failures," as well as national goals such as the reduction of income inequality.  The second part of the course will examine case studies that apply the theory.
